Jacques FINKELSTEIN, age 12, had under his care two brothers – Léon, 11, and Henri, 6 – and a sister, Marcelle, 10. They were all arrested in October 1942 at Sainte-Menehoulde (Marne). Their parents, Charles and Ida, arrested before that date, had been deported on convoy 11 with their older children, Albert, 20, and Rose, 18. The four younger children were deported on November 4, 1942, on convoy 40. In October Jacques wrote this letter, his only testimony: Drancy, October 1942 Cher Monsieur: This letter comes to you from a poor Jewish boy. My name is Jacques Finkelstein. I'm twelve years old. I am currently interned in Drancy. I have in my care three young children, who are my brothers and sister: Leon, 11; Marcelle, 10; and Henri, 6. Our parents Polish Jews were deported three months ago along with my grandfather and my big sister. There is absolutely no one to whom I can send my coupons for packages, and so it is to you that I turn with my last hopes. The family lived at Sainte-Menehoulde, 38 rue Florion. The children were pupils at the Chanzy lycée. A commemorative tablet to the Finkelstein family has been placed at Sainte-Menehoulde.
